Frequently Asked Questionts
QMed does most of its scheduling online. The fastest way to make an appointment is to register on our Booking page. (If you don’t get a confirmation email within one business day, send us a message.) Once you are registered, you can schedule a visit online, through the Patient Portal. We look forward to meeting you!
If you have insurance, your visit may be covered. See the Insurance/Fees page for more info about which insurances QMed can accept at this time. Even if it is covered by insurance, there may be additional costs for a copay or if you have not met your deductible (see below for a 1 minute explanation of your deductible.)
If you do not have insurance or we can’t accept your plan, the first visit will cost $299, and visits after that will cost $149. Blood tests will be $99 each time we check hormone levels, which may be needed up to 4 times in the first year, and 1-2 times per year after that. See the Insurance/Fees page for pricing details.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer any sliding scale pricing.
Please see this video for information about deductibles
That is a great question! It is often hard to tell in advance what will or won’t be covered by your insurance. But the best way to determine your out-of-pocket cost is to look up prices on GoodRx (or a similar discount site.) When looking up medications, here are the names and typical doses of commonly used medicines:
Testosterone cypionate (a 1ml vial typically lasts 2-4 weeks)
Estradiol tablets (typical dose is 2-6mg per day)
Estradiol patches (typical dose is 0.025-0.1mg/day, applied twice weekly)
Estradiol valerate injections (a 5ml vial typically lasts 2-3 months)
Spironolactone (typical dose is 200mg per day)
Progesterone (typical dose is 100mg per day)
Often your pharmacist will give you the needles and syringes you need or sell them to you for a small fee. If your pharmacist is unable to provide needles, you can buy them online at a site like Amazon (no prescription needed.) Here is what you should order:
18 gauge (18g) 1 or 1.5 inch needles to draw up the medicine, one per dose
25 gauge 1 or 1.5 inch needles to inject the medicine, one per dose (remember, a higher number is actually a smallerneedle)
3 mL syringes, one per dose

We can accept most major insurance plans. We cannot take Medicare or Medicaid at this time, due to federal restrictions for telemedicine. See the Insurances/Fees page for more info. Remember, if you have not yet met your deductible for the year, you may be responsible for some or all of the payment for your visit, which will be applied to your deductible. Please contact your insurance company if you have questions about your copay or deductible.
QMed is proud to assist patients with legal name and gender marker change! See the National Center for Transgender Equality for lots of helpful info. If you feel ready to start the name and/or gender marker change process, please ask Dr. Lowell for a letter at your visit. She will be happy to write an official letter including the standard language required by the United States Passport Agency.
QMed does not require a letter from a therapist before starting hormone therapy, and we use an informed consent model. We do recommend meeting with a supportive mental health professional if you can, because transition can be a challenging and emotionally disruptive process at times. But we understand that this may not be an option for many people. For a list trans-affirming therapists, see our Resources page. If you know of a great therapist who is not listed, let us know by sending us a message!
QMed uses Labcorp for bloodwork. Labs can be ordered at your visit, or even better, before your visit and then we can discuss results. (Allow 2-3 days for results to be sent to QMed.) You can go to any Labcorp near you! See Labcorp’s website for locations and to book an appointment for a blood draw: www.labcorp.com.
Insurance may cover your labs – contact your insurance provider to find out. If labs are not covered by your insurance provider, we offer a lab package deal through QMed for $100.
Please contact us for more information about labs, and/or if you need a lab order before your visit.
