An intramuscular injection is a technique used to deliver a medication deep into the muscles. Use your thumb and index finger to stretch the skin on either side of the injection site. While holding your skin firm, insert the needle into the muscle at a 90º angle with a quick, firm thrust. Watch the video for details.
With subcutaneous injection, a short needle is used to inject a drug into the tissue layer between the skin and the muscle (known as subcutaneous tissue). Pinch an inch of skin and insert the needle at a 90º angle. If you cannot pinch at least 1 inch of tissue, you may need to use a 45º angle to stay within the subcutaneous tissue (and above the muscle layer). Watch the video for details.
